PMAT expands Navy partnership with Big Data Analytics SBIR award

Oct 30, 2020

PMAT awarded contract to provide Big Data analytics services to empower NAVAIR’s complete Recognized Maritime Picture (RMP), actionable Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA), and fully informed, time-dominant decisions.

Norfolk, VA–Sept. 11, 2020— PMAT today announced they have been awarded a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract to execute big data analytics techniques that filter and identify critical content from sensor imagery products—reducing data link bandwidth requirements and helping NAVAIR operators identify mission-critical data.

The continued proliferation of Navy platforms and sensor systems have created an excess of data, which have inhibited NAVAIR’s ability to make fully informed, time-dominant decisions. In partnership with CUBRC, this Phase One award will help tame the volume and frequency of information to help NAVAIR operators access the information that matters. PMAT will implement Selective Information Discovery and Efficient Transmission (SIDET), a proof-of-concept capability.

  • PMAT’s Extensible Collaboration and Analytics PlatformTM(X-CAPTM) will provide a core architecture aligned with the Minotaur Family of Systems (MFoS)
  • Big Data Analytic techniqueswill identify and extract critical content from sensor imagery products based on declarative search parameters so that only critical discovery updates need to be transmitted
  • Intelligent cropping and compression techniques will reduce the amount of data transmitted while simultaneously supporting the restoration of critical context during decompression

“The innovative aspect of our approach is combining a Naval interest model with a conditional Generative Adversarial Network (cGAN) to more efficiently identify critical information needs and represent the matching critical detail in a smaller form-factor for easier transmission,” explains Chad Phillips, PMAT Program Manager. “This is all in a solution that is compatible with the current and anticipated architectures for NAVAIR’s Minotaur Family of Systems (MFoS) and the Digital Integration Support Cell (DISC)’s Digital Warfare Platform (DWP).”

Phase One of this capability will be conducted from now into 2021 using new and existing PMAT contract vehicles with USGC and NAVAIR. Phase One starts out with a distinct defense focus that will continue in Phase Two anticipated for late 2021 and into 2022. Based on Phase Two successes, the capability may also be adapted for potential non-defense use as part of PMAT’s DOD-approved commercialization strategy.
