System Integration Lab (SIL) Technician

PMAT is seeking highly qualified lab technicians to operate and maintain PMAT’s SSDS System Integration Laboratory (SIL). Ships Self Defense System (SSDS), is the US Navy’s combat system deployed on over fifty aircraft carriers and amphibious support ships. PMAT has a contract to develop and maintain the SSDS software and is seeking qualified individuals to grow this capability in San Diego, California.

The SSDS SIL houses multiple ship sets of tactical combat system processors, consoles, networks, and simulation test equipment emulating sensors and effectors capable of replicating the US Navy SSDS fleet. The ideal candidate will have multiple years of experience operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and upgrading SSDS combat system hardware onboard SSDS ships, in Navy schoolyards, or at Navy labs.

PMAT is seeking highly motivated self-starting individuals that can quickly familiarize themselves with available hardware specifications, drawings, and interface definitions and evaluate hardware, firmware, and software gaps blocking the integrated operation of a complete shipset. Understanding the SSDS Fire Control Loop, comms, training, installed networks, and combat systems organizational roles and responsibilities are desired. 

The Lab Technician will support the SIL strategy for development and maintenance per the direction of the Lab Manager. The position requires both strong independent performance and ownership of tasks and frequent interactions within a multi-disciplinary team of technicians and engineers. 

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Perform preventative maintenance on US Navy combat system equipment and simulations – inspect, check, perform adjustments and minor repairs and replace defective components.
  • Inspect and test electrical systems and equipment to locate and diagnose malfunctions through visual inspections and testing devices.
  • Reassemble and test equipment after preventative maintenance.
  • Diagnose system and equipment malfunctions, and expedite and coordinate repairs or replacements to avoid excessive downtime.
  • Refer to drawings and manufacturers’ specifications that relate to equipment undergoing maintenance.
  • Develop and maintain string configuration documentation indicating which assets are connected to which string and the SW configuration of each string/asset.
  • Configure Lab to support SW development/test activities (manage software loads, configure strings with SIM/STIM environments
  • Maintain Lab configuration drawings/files defining the physical layout of equipment, cables, electrical power, cooling, data distribution, etc.
  • Ensure proper working conditions for multiple engineering teams in the office and lab.
  • Maintain lab cleanliness and operational readiness (keep the lab in constant readiness for inspection)
  • Submit facilities and equipment repair requests, as needed, for lab maintenance.
  • Support organization of the lab layout and moving tools, equipment, and inventory as required for optimum performance.
  • Security policy adherence
  • Lab access control (e.g., grant access, coordinate all lab tours and visitors)
  • Maintain visitor, open/close, trusted download, and maintenance logs
  • Ensure proper marking of classified/unclassified lab assets and media
  • Support accurate and up-to-date inventory of GFP and ensure audit readiness.
  • Support an inventory database for auditing, tracking, and recording maintenance(scheduled and non-scheduled) of all lab and office equipment, assets, SW, tools, and supplies.
  • Support periodic GFP audits
  • Support periodic GFP meetings with customers for the purpose of requesting/receiving GFP needed to support SW development.
  • Support the Lab Manager to ensure all GFP assets are properly documented and segregated and isolate nonconforming material.
  • Understand and ensure compliance with all safety requirements, procedures, and lab equipment maintenance and care.
  • Have the responsibility to open/close the lab to support scheduled work, maintaining security integrity.
  • Support quality, safety, and regulatory policies and procedures
  • Support the Lab Manager in the preparation of weekly status reports

Required Skills:

  • Familiarity with classified media handling, marking, and control
  • Experience with OSHA requirements and ESD best practices
  • Experience working with Software Engineering teams to help define requirements for and lead the development of new SIL builds or updates to existing SILs.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of relevant experience OR In the absence of a degree, 6 years of relevant experience is required, preferably Navy Electronics Technician.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Navy Electronics Technician experience
  • Demonstrated experience performing in a complex lab environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of a System Integration Lab (SIL) environment, facilities planning processes
  • Demonstrated success in conducting complex technical tasking.
  • Test engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of other Navy combat systems (e.g., AEGIS, SSDS, ZCS, etc.).
  • Familiarity with LINUX and UNIX-based operating systems
  • Knowledge and experience with Local Area Network configurations

Clearance: Active Secret clearance or above
